Red flag legislative proposals HB 1213 and HB 1227
- In February 2023, two gun law proposals failed to get out of a South Dakota legislative committee, House Bills 1213 and 1227. House Bill 1213 would hold gun owners accountable for not securing their guns properly, subjecting owners to felony charges if a minor was to get their hands on the gun. House Bill 1227 was a red flag law that would have allowed courts to take possession of a firearm from people who potentially show signs of self-harm or harm to another person.
